SNP members back Swinney's independence plan for Holyrood election
SNP members back Swinney's plan to secure at least 65 seats in 2026 Holyrood election as a clear mandate for a second independence referendum, with 60% of Scots supporting this approach.
- On Saturday, First Minister John Swinney told delegates at the Aberdeen conference the Scottish National Party will win big ahead of next year's Holyrood election.
- The motion from John Swinney and SNP depute leader Keith Brown called for targeting at least 65 seats as the only uncontested way to deliver a new vote on Scotland’s future.
- A poll commissioned by the Alba Party and conducted by Find Out Now found six out of 10 Scots supported using a Holyrood election as a legitimate route, surveying 1,165 Scots between October 1 and October 8 this year.
- However, delegates nevertheless voted to approve the proposal after a spirited debate, though Kenny MacAskill warned the UK government could still refuse consent for another referendum.
- Swinney has staked his leadership on winning independence by 2026, saying `I took the leadership to deliver independence and that's exactly what I'm going to do for Scotland`.
