Cricket-Root Reaches 14,000-Run Milestone but New Zealand Edge Towards Victory
Root became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to pass 14,000 Test runs and did it in his 302nd innings, officials said.
On Thursday, England batter Joe Root reached the 14,000 Test runs milestone at The Oval, becoming only the second player after Sachin Tendulkar to achieve this feat during the second Test against New Zealand.
Root, serving as stand-in captain for Ben Stokes, reached the milestone in 302 innings, 24 innings slower than Tendulkar, who took 279 innings to cross the 14,000-run mark.
Chasing a daunting 463-run target, Root achieved the feat while arriving at the crease under pressure after England lost early wickets, including Ben Duckett.
Becoming the first cricketer to score over 2,000 runs against New Zealand, Root further solidified his position as one of the game's greatest batters.
Tendulkar's all-time record of 15,921 runs now stands within reach; Root needs fewer than 1,900 more runs to break it, while he and Harry Brook build a partnership to keep the series alive.
