Joe Negri, Beloved Mister Rogers' 'Handyman,' Jazz Guitarist, Dies Days Before 100th Birthday
Negri, a Pittsburgh native and longtime fixture on the show, was remembered for three decades on "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood," his family said.
Joe Negri, 99, a jazz guitarist and 'Handyman Negri' on 'Mister Rogers' Neighborhood,' died Saturday of natural causes, Fred Rogers Productions confirmed to KDKA-TV on Sunday evening.
In 1968, Fred Rogers created the 'Handyman Negri' role specifically for him, a character Negri played for nearly 35 years on the beloved children's program.
Beyond television, Negri taught jazz guitar for nearly 50 years at the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne, and Carnegie Mellon University, continuing to teach well into his 90s.
He died just days before his 100th birthday on June 10, when Pittsburgh's music community had planned to celebrate his legacy and contributions to the arts.
Though not 'handy' in real life, Negri recalled, 'I'm glad he gave me the music shop because it gave me a really good opportunity to utilize my music.
