Duran Lantink Won’t Rest on Nostalgia at Jean Paul Gaultier Couture
The debut collection mixed corsetry, trompe l’oeil and AI-influenced distortions, with Jean Paul Gaultier and celebrity guests in the front row.
Permanent creative director Duran Lantink debuted his first couture collection for Jean Paul Gaultier today in a stark white Paris venue, blending heritage techniques with artificial intelligence.
Lantink succeeded a five-year period of rotating designers including Simone Rocha and Glenn Martens, marking the first permanent artistic director appointment since the founder's retirement.
Surrealist silhouettes dominated the avant-garde collection, featuring a velveteen gown with "horns" protruding from the hips and a glitched torso corset distorted by artificial intelligence.
Front-Row guests including Cardi B, Teyana Taylor, and Catherine Deneuve watched as Jean Paul Gaultier embraced Lantink after the finale to a warm ovation.
Lantink said he aimed to "celebrate craftsmanship and experimentation" by referencing eighteenth-century couture origins, drawing from the eras of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette.
