Japan railway names third cat stationmaster

Yontama, the third feline stationmaster at Kishi Station, continues a tradition that has increased tourism and helped sustain the Kishigawa Line since 2007, company officials said.

  • The Kishigawa Line's tradition began with Tama in 2007, attracting tourists from home and abroad and inspiring other local railways to appoint animals, the company said.
  • At the inauguration, Wakayama Electric Railway President Mitsunobu Kojima placed a medal engraved with Yontama's title around her neck and presented her appointment letter, drawing applause as Yontama responded with a `Meow.`
  • On the same day, Gotama was appointed at Idakiso Station and Rokutama was introduced as a new employee, while two other cats currently work for the railway.
  • The newly appointed Yontama is a nine-year-old female who served at Idakiso Station since 2018, filling the post left vacant after predecessor Nitama died last November and became honorary stationmaster.
