Japan launches government body to address concerns over foreign nationals
JAPAN, JUL 15 – Japan formed a cross-agency body to address issues linked to the record 3.8 million foreign nationals amid demographic challenges and election pressures.
- On Tuesday, Japan established an administrative office in Tokyo to address concerns over the growing foreign national population.
- This initiative follows proposals made in June by lawmakers affiliated with Shigeru Ishiba's ruling party to address the record high of 3.8 million foreign residents last year, who represent about 3% of Japan's population.
- The office, staffed by around 80 officials from multiple ministries, will act as a cross-agency control tower focusing on issues like crime, over-tourism, and immigration enforcement.
- Ishiba stated that illegal activities and disruptive behavior by certain foreigners, along with misuse of administrative procedures, have caused the public to feel uneasy and deceived.
- The formation aims to ease citizens' concerns amid a surge in popularity for the populist Sanseito party and risks to the ruling coalition's majority in the July 20 upper house election.
