Jan. 6 pipe bomb suspect arrested, faces explosives charges, Trump DOJ says
Brian Cole was arrested after a five-year FBI investigation involving over 1,000 interviews and 39,000 video files; the pipe bombs could have caused serious harm, officials said.
- On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Justice confirmed the arrest and identity of Brian Cole Jr., 30, of Woodbridge, Va., charging him after a nearly five-year investigation.
- Video footage shows two undetonated pipe bombs were planted on Jan. 5, 2021, outside the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee headquarters in Southwest Washington, D.C.
- Investigators said the FBI Washington Field Office captured surveillance footage of a masked individual in sweats, Nike shoes, and a hoodie placing the devices, and analyzed over 600 lines of data during the probe.
- DOJ officials said multiple search warrants were executed and the investigation remains ongoing, but officials refused to comment on motive or whether terrorism charges would be added and indicated additional charges may be forthcoming.
- This year the FBI offered a reward, and FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino and FBI Director Kash Patel credited a team effort, with Patel praising Bongino’s leadership.
