James Gray’s ‘Paper Tiger’ Will Open This Year’s New York Film Festival
The crime drama stars Adam Driver, Miles Teller and Scarlett Johansson, and Neon plans a theatrical release in November after its Cannes premiere.
On September 25, the 64th New York Film Festival will open with director James Gray's crime drama Paper Tiger making its North American premiere at Alice Tully Hall.
Set in 1986 New York City, the film follows brothers Irwin and Gary Pearl, who become entangled with the Russian mafia after embarking on a get-rich-quick scheme to clean up the Gowanus Canal.
Starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, and Miles Teller, the film premiered in competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, where it received a seven-minute standing ovation.
Gray and members of the cast and crew will attend the gala premiere, while single tickets for the festival, which runs through October 12, go on sale to the public on September 15.
The festival, which launched in 1963, has established itself as a major industry launchpad; 13 of the 64 films chosen to open the event have earned Academy Award nominations for best picture.
