J Batt Officially Leaving Michigan State for Kentucky
Batt will oversee Kentucky athletics and Champions Blue after helping drive fundraising and a $400 million commitment at Michigan State, officials said.
On Monday, the University of Kentucky announced J Batt as its new Director of Athletics and CEO of Champions Blue LLC, marking his departure from Michigan State University after one year.
Batt's departure follows President Kevin Guskiewicz's decision to accept the presidency at Clemson University, amid internal friction within Michigan State's Board of Trustees that complicated the university's administrative landscape.
During his Michigan State tenure, Batt helped secure more than $400 million in commitments and launched Spartan Ventures, a nonprofit designed to expand revenue opportunities following leadership roles at Georgia Tech and the University of Alabama.
Batt succeeds retiring Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart, who led the department for nearly 25 years, and will oversee Champions Blue, a corporate-style structure separating commercial operations from academic and administrative arms.
Kentucky President Eli Capilouto cited Batt's fundraising record and facility investment strategy as key factors; Batt will officially begin later this summer, committed to upholding the university's "championship standard.
