Malaysia PM Anwar Personally Contacts Indonesian President Prabowo over Haze Crisis
Anwar said 38 areas recorded unhealthy air quality as Malaysia stepped up cloud seeding and sought regional coordination to curb the transboundary haze.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim contacted Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto regarding the "alarming" transboundary haze affecting Malaysia, and Prabowo agreed to take necessary steps to address the crisis.
The Department of Environment reported 38 areas in Malaysia recorded unhealthy Air Pollutant Index readings, with Segamat, Johor reaching 187, attributed to 210 hotspots detected in Sumatra on Oct 7.
His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim urged authorities to close schools in areas with Air Pollutant Index readings over 150, while the Royal Malaysian Air Force increased daily cloud seeding operations to mitigate health impacts.
Anwar directed Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup to engage regional counterparts and contact the Asean Secretariat for coordination.
The haze continues to affect southern and central Sumatra, Singapore, and the southern Peninsula, with Malaysia expressing readiness to cooperate with Jakarta as the situation remains worrying for the health of Malaysians.
