Italy summons Israeli ambassador after shots fired at UN in Lebanon

No one was injured when warning shots damaged an Italian vehicle, and Rome said the convoy was clearly marked with the U.N. flag.

  • On Wednesday, Italy summoned the Israeli ambassador to demand an explanation after Israeli military forces fired warning shots at an Italian logistics convoy in Lebanon. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani warned that Israeli forces had "no authority to touch" Rome's troops.
  • UNIFIL monitors the demarcation line in southern Lebanon between Israeli troops and Iran-backed Hezbollah fighters. Israel recently carried out its heaviest strikes on Lebanon since the conflict broke out early last month.
  • The Italian logistics convoy was traveling from Shama to Beirut on Wednesday when the Israeli military fired warning shots about 2 km after departure. "Israeli warning shots have damaged one of our vehicles; fortunately, no one was injured," Tajani told parliament.
  • Defence Minister Guido Crosetto called on the United Nations to urgently engage with Israeli authorities to clarify the incident. "Endangering convoys clearly identified with the UN flag cannot be tolerated," Crosetto said.
  • UNIFIL comprised about 7,500 peacekeepers as of March 30, with Italy contributing more than 750 soldiers. The incident risks compromising the mission's credibility and the safety of all UNIFIL personnel.
