Italian Defense Minister Condemns U.S.-Israeli Attacks

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto condemned U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran as illegal and said Italy will support Gulf and Cypriot partners with defense assets amid regional instability.

  • In the lower house on March 5, Italy's defence minister said, 'It is a war that was started without anyone in the world knowing. One in which we, like the rest of the world, find ourselves having to manage .'
  • On Saturday, U.S. and Israeli forces carried out strikes targeting Iran's leadership, missile arsenal and nuclear programme, prompting Iran to retaliate with thousands of drones and ballistic missiles against Israel, UK and U.S. bases.
  • Italy will provide air-defence aid to Gulf countries and deploy naval assets to Cyprus, with Crosetto saying Italy must respond as the United States and Israel launched the conflict without warning.
  • Humanitarian and economic fallout includes over 100 deaths in Lebanon and around a dozen in Israel, disrupting the world's oil and gas supplies, international shipping, and travellers.
  • Despite Rome's U.S. ties, Crosetto said the strikes 'of course fell outside, needless to say, the rules of international law', the strongest criticism from Italy's right-wing administration since last year.
