- The incident occurred last Thursday in the Palestinian village of Tayasir, where CNN reporter Jeremy Diamond and photojournalist Cyril Theophilos were covering a violent settler assault. Soldiers detained the crew and placed Theophilos in a chokehold, damaging his camera.
- During the detention, soldiers stated the West Bank belongs to Jews and they were avenging a settler's death. One soldier, Meir, admitted the outpost was illegal but said it would "slowly, slowly" be legalized with his help.
- National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir called the suspension a "grave mistake that harms our fighters and Israel's deterrence capability," while Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats, demanded the IDF "clearly state" that "terror is dealt with an iron fist."
- The US administration previously considered sanctioning Netzah Yehuda in 2024 over alleged abuses, though Israel averted action by promising corrective measures. The battalion, originally intended to integrate Orthodox Jews, has recently attracted radical Hilltop Youth members.
