ISP: Capitol Police asking for information on stolen tortoises from Indianapolis Zoo
Two microchipped, critically endangered tortoises were stolen, prompting police to seek public assistance with tips to aid recovery.
- Investigators say the Indiana State Police reported two critically endangered tortoises were stolen from the Indianapolis Zoo between 10 a.m. Oct. 11 and 10 a.m. Oct. 12.
- State and zoo records show both species taken are critically endangered, facing threats from habitat loss, the pet trade and poaching, state police and the zoo said.
- Notably, investigators say the Egyptian tortoise has a prominent scar on its underside, and both tortoises are still missing, police say.
- The Capitol Police Section of the Indiana State Police put out a notice on Monday urging the public to call 317-234-2131 or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477 with tips.
- Investigators note security gaps as authorities say it is unclear how the tortoises were removed without detection; the Egyptian tortoise is about 4 inches and 1 pound, while the Northern Spider tortoise reaches 5 inches and 1 pound.
