Islamic State claims responsibility for attack on Chinese-run restaurant in Afghanistan

- On Jan 19, an explosion tore through a Chinese-run restaurant inside a hotel in Kabul's Shahr-e-Naw, with an anonymous shop owner reporting the blast around 3:30 pm.
- The Afghan branch of the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was carried out by a suicide bomber, while the Amaq news agency cited `growing crimes by the Chinese government against Uighurs` in targeting Chinese citizens.
- Emergency responders confirmed the blast killed at least seven people, including one Chinese national and six Afghans, and about 20 injured were admitted to hospital, including four women and a child.
- Social media videos showed debris scattered outside, smoke spewing and a large hole torn into the front of the restaurant, while authorities said they were investigating in the heavily guarded area of Kabul.
- Chinese business visitors have flocked to Afghanistan since 2021, and the restaurant was jointly run by Chinese Muslim Abdul Majid, his wife, and Afghan partner Abdul Jabbar Mahmood, serving the Chinese Muslim community.
