Is same-day voter registration available in your state?
Eligible voters in the three states can register and cast provisional ballots at county offices, polling places or vote centers, officials said.
On Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2026, eligible voters in 24 states and Washington, D.C., can register and cast their ballots simultaneously, allowing those who missed earlier deadlines to participate.
Through the "same day" voter registration process, citizens are "conditionally" registered to vote, and their ballots are placed in special envelopes until election officials confirm voter identity and registration status.
King County, Washington, operates seven election centers where voters can register until 8 p.m., while California requires eligible residents to present proof of identity, age, and U.S. citizenship at polling places.
New Hampshire, one of the 24 states offering same-day registration, allows Granite Staters to cast ballots in Tuesday's midterm elections when they bring proof of identity, age, citizenship, and domicile to the polls.
Other states maintain different registration rules; voters in Massachusetts, New York, and North Carolina can only register same-day during early voting periods, though Massachusetts voters will decide on November 3 whether to allow it.
