The latest data published by Frontex have been received in Brussels with a tone of cautious optimism. According to consolidated figures from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, detections of illegal border crossings at the European Union’s external borders fell by 26% in 2025, to around 178,000. Less and less fleeing people are coming to the EU, but not all routes reduce the numbers.
This is a significant decline: illegal entry to the borders of the European Union fell by more than a quarter last year. According to Frontex figures, the European border agency, it is the lowest level in several years.
The route of the Central Mediterranean was where more irregular entry was detected in 2025 (66.328, a 1% homologous break), followed by the Eastern Mediterranean, with 51.399 detections, less than 27%.
