The Iron Beam laser system offers near-zero interception costs and enhances Israel's multi-layered defense against rockets, mortars, and drones, officials said.
- On December 28, 2025, MAFT and Rafael handed over the first Iron Beam to the IDF at Rafael, attended by Minister Israel Katz and Dov Oster, with the system named Or Eitan.
- MAFAT has led development in recent years with Rafael, Elbit Systems, SCD and Shafir Systems to create a cost-effective laser system against rockets, mortar bombs and unmanned aerial vehicles.
- The Iron Beam system offers up to 10 kilometers of range, compared with Iron Dome’s 40 kilometers, and uses a 100 kilowatts laser with an electro-optical aiming system, operated from the same control vehicle and integrated into Israel’s multi-layered defence system.
- The low cost per interception enables deployments at borders, population centers and strategic infrastructures, with each Iron Beam interception costing about $5 versus $30,000 for Iron Dome.
- Officials caution that cloudy and hazy conditions reduce Iron Beam’s effectiveness, so the system will operate side by side with kinetic interceptors despite being called a world-class technological and engineering breakthrough.
