Iran’s Quds Force Commander Esmail Qaani killed in Israeli strike, reports say. Who was he?
Esmail Qaani, commander of Iran's Quds Force, was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike during Operation Rising Lion in June 2025. Previously, he had been reported missing following an Israeli airstrike in Beirut in October 2024.
Qaani had a multifaceted role in the Middle East - He had replaced Soleimani as the leader of the Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force
The New York Times reported that among the many senior officials killed in the airstrike was Esmail Qaani, who succeeded Qassem Soleimani in 2020. As commander of the Quds Force, he was responsible for coordinating Tehran's proxies in the region.
If confirmed, this would be a severe blow to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, which had already lost its commander. • Qaani replaced Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in 2020 and was considered one of the most senior figures in the Iranian security establishment and the resistance axis.
Ismail Ghaani was in charge of special operations outside Iran.
