Iran's chief of army staff and defense minister killed in airstrike, state TV says

The joint U.S.-Israel airstrike killed multiple top Iranian military leaders, including the chief of army staff and defense minister, triggering widespread regional missile retaliations.

  • A strike on a Supreme Defense Council meeting killed Gen. Abdol Rahim Mousavi, Chief of Army Staff of the Armed Forces, and Brig. Gen. Aziz Nasirzadeh, Defence Minister, Iranian state television reported.
  • Israel and the United States coordinated a months-long operation following a massive bombing effort that targeted Revolutionary Guard command facilities and missile sites.
  • Among other victims, Major General Mohammad Pakpour and Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani, senior advisor to the Commander-in-Chief and Secretary of the Defense Council, were reported killed, with Iranian media saying a girls' school strike killed at least 108 and caused at least 201 fatalities overall.
  • The strikes spurred airspace closures and air-defense fire across the region, with Iran launching missiles and drones at Israel and Gulf states targeting U.S. installations in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.
  • Iran confirmed on Sunday that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in joint U.S.-Israeli strikes; officials said an interim leadership council will soon form and the IAEA will meet on Monday.
