Iran Vows to Prevent US From Reopening Strait of Hormuz
The Iranian army said it will not relent as the waterway handles about 20% of the world’s oil, officials said.
- On Monday, Iranian army spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia rejected United States efforts to forcefully reopen the Hormuz Strait, insisting that "respecting the rights of the Iranian people is the only way to open the Strait."
- Iran closed the Hormuz Strait on Saturday, citing "unauthorised transit," shortly after United States missiles and drones struck cities including Bushehr, Chabahar, and Jask following a collapsed 60-day Memorandum of Understanding.
- About 20 per cent of the world's oil passes through the Hormuz Strait, and its closure led to a 50 per cent increase in global oil prices; President Donald Trump threatened to seize the passage and run it as "guardian."
- Trump claimed the Hormuz Strait will remain open "with or without Iran," announcing a 20 per cent cargo charge on vessels, while Iran retaliated by launching strikes towards Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan.
- Akraminia vowed to "avenge the blood of the martyrs," specifically citing the "martyred leader of the Islamic Revolution" as the US conducted its third consecutive night of strikes across Iran.
