Iran Says Held First Meeting with Oman on Managing Hormuz
Iran and Oman discussed future management of the strategic waterway as technical talks on the ceasefire deal are set to continue, officials said.
On Monday, Iran and Oman held the inaugural Joint Hormuz Committee meeting in Muscat to discuss managing the Strait. "We exchanged views on the future management," said Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.
This diplomacy follows a fragile Pakistan-brokered memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the Middle East war, which began in late February and disrupted shipping through the Strait.
Tensions surged early Sunday when US Central Command attacked 10 Iranian military targets over "continued Iranian aggression against commercial shipping." Iran retaliated with strikes against US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.
Following the exchange, a US official told AFP that both nations agreed to halt attacks. "Both sides will stand down for now and vessels can move freely" in the Strait, the official stated.
Technical talks regarding the MOU are slated to continue, though control of the Strait remains a key sticking point. Iran previously warned that bypassing its preferred route through the Strait would "increase tensions" in West Asia.
