Will the Latest Strike in the Strait of Hormuz Impact the US-Iran Deal?
The strike delayed a U.N. aid mission and exposed divisions over whether the Strait of Hormuz will stay open and toll-free.
An Iranian drone struck a commercial ship in Hormuz on Thursday, halting traffic and testing the fragile American-Iran deal aimed at ending hostilities.
This incident occurred one week into the 60-day period during which American and Iranian officials are working to finalize an agreement that relies on keeping Hormuz open.
Iran stated it cannot guarantee the safety of ships avoiding approved lanes, calling the arrangement "unacceptable," prompting the United Nations to postpone a mission assisting ships in the Persian Gulf.
"They wanna make a deal with us very badly, and we probably will," President Donald Trump said, expressing confidence in negotiations as oil prices drop.
Despite face-to-face talks earlier this week, American and Iranian officials remain publicly divided on whether Hormuz will be toll-free, while gas prices remain about a dollar higher than before the war.
