Iran Intercepts US MQ-1 Drone East of Strait of Hormuz
Iran says the drone was tracked with infrared imagery and recovered after an electronic warfare operation, while U.S. officials have not confirmed the loss.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Thursday it intercepted a U.S. drone east of the Strait of Hormuz using a new air-defense system; Tehran released video footage of the captured aircraft.
While the IRGC identified the aircraft as an MQ-1, military analysis indicates it is an MQM-170C Outlaw manufactured by Griffon Aerospace and typically used by the U.S. military as an inexpensive aerial target for training and testing.
U.S. Central Command spokesperson Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins declined to confirm the loss, stating "U.S. forces remain vigilant and laser-focused on our assigned missions." Although IRGC imagery appears credible, U.S. officials urge caution regarding unverified Iranian claims.
This incident occurs amid ongoing efforts by regional mediators to revive peace negotiations. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated Wednesday that Iran remains in "close and ongoing contact" with intermediaries to implement a seven-day peace plan.
All of this comes amid growing signs that the United States and Israel are preparing a new major campaign against Iran. Stimulating Iranian air defenses to glean intelligence about their capabilities would be critical in any such operation.
IRGC intercepted an U.S. MQM-170 drone in the Strait of Ormuz, reported by Tasnim. According to information, the drone mission was to identify Iranian air defence capabilities.
