Iran Intercepts US MQ-1 Drone East of Strait of Hormuz
Iran says the drone was conducting reconnaissance on its air defenses, and U.S. officials have not confirmed losing the aircraft.
On Thursday, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it captured a U.S.-made MQM-170-series drone west of the Strait of Hormuz during an 'offensive electronic warfare operation' targeting Iranian air defenses.
The U.S. military has not explicitly confirmed or denied losing any specific aircraft in the region, though U.S. Central Command spokesperson Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins stated the IRGC has 'repeatedly lied out of desperation.'
Military analysts identified the platform as an MQM-170C Outlaw, contradicting Tehran's claim it was an MQ-1 Predator. The U.S. Army awarded Griffon Aerospace nearly $68 million on June 3 for Gen 3 Outlaw systems in support of Operation Epic Fury.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi remains in 'close and ongoing contact' with intermediaries to discuss a seven-day peace plan, while Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei to revive negotiations.
This incident follows Iran's recovery of an Anduril Dive-LD uncrewed underwater vehicle last month, establishing a pattern where Tehran capitalizes on lost equipment. Observers note that stimulating Iranian air defenses helps the United States glean intelligence for potential military operations.
IRGC intercepted an U.S. MQM-170 drone in the Strait of Ormuz, reported by Tasnim. According to information, the drone mission was to identify Iranian air defence capabilities.
