Iranian strait authority says Sinokor vessels will face legal action
- The Persian Gulf Strait Authority said on Tuesday that all vessels belonging to South Korean company Sinokor will face "legal action" starting November 1, as the Tehran-backed body manages passage requests in the Strait of Hormuz.
- Since United States and Israeli airstrikes on Iran in February, Tehran has sought to tighten its grip on the Strait by attacking shipping, restricting transit to gain leverage over Washington while disrupting oil flows from Arab Gulf producers to Asia.
- The authority claimed Sinokor vessels committed the highest number of crossing violations over the past three months, with "appropriate actions" already taken against seven of them; Sinokor previously appeared on a list of 45 tankers accused of breaking rules.
- In response to Iranian attacks, the United States imposed a naval blockade against ships linked to the Islamic Republic in the Strait; Sinokor did not immediately comment on the authority's statement regarding upcoming legal measures.
- Gulf producers have adapted to the blockade by relying on dark transits—switching off tracking systems to evade detection—to protect oil flows that underpin their economies while the blockade has choked off Iranian exports.
