Rubio Accuses Hezbollah of Trying to 'Drag Lebanon Back Into Chaos'
Rubio said Hezbollah’s calls to topple Lebanon’s government and reject talks with Israel risk renewed conflict as U.S.-backed negotiations continue.
On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned Hezbollah's "reckless call to overthrow Lebanon's democratically elected government," warning the group's "threats of violence" would fail to succeed.
Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem urged citizens to "take to the streets" to bring down the government, citing U.S. sanctions against the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Qard Al-Hassan financial institution as justification.
Since March 2, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed 3,151 people and wounded 9,571 others, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry, while strikes continue despite a recently extended ceasefire.
Negotiators are scheduled to hold a fourth round of talks in Washington on June 2 and 3, as the U.S. pursues a potential deal with Iran that could end the conflict.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said President Trump "reaffirmed Israel's right to defend itself" in a phone call, while the U.S. expressed support for the Lebanese government's restoration efforts.
