Iran allows essential goods vessels to its ports via Hormuz strait, Tasnim says

Industry groups told members to resume shipments to southern Iranian ports as the directive allows vessels carrying essential goods and livestock feed.

  • On Saturday, Iran approved the passage of ships carrying humanitarian and essential goods through the Strait of Hormuz, according to a letter from the Agriculture Ministry's trade development office reported by the semi-official Tasnim News Agency.
  • The Iranian military previously restricted movement through the Strait, strangling global energy flows for weeks before this approval. A military spokesman stated in an Arabic-language video that "Brotherly Iraq is exempt from any restrictions we have imposed on the Strait of Hormuz."
  • This declaration could unleash as much as 3 million barrels a day of Iraqi oil cargoes. A French container ship and Japanese-owned tanker recently crossed, marking potential first transits by western-linked vessels since the conflict began.
  • Following the approval, industry associations informed member companies to resume sending cargo ships to southern Iranian ports. Tracking vessel movements remains difficult due to potential electronic interference with ship signals and intentional transponder disablement by pilots.
  • Regional tensions escalated following a joint offensive launched Feb. 28, which has killed more than 1,340 people to date and triggered the previous maritime restrictions now being partially eased. Current transits remain a small fraction of pre-war rates.
