Iowa governor believes in US war with Iran despite ‘sacrifice’ by state soldiers who died
Iowa honors two Army Reserve soldiers killed in an Iranian retaliatory strike in Kuwait; flags ordered at half-staff until their interment, Governor Reynolds said.
- On Thursday, March 5, 2026, Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered flags across Iowa to be flown at half-staff for two soldiers killed in Kuwait.
- Both soldiers were assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command, U.S. Army Reserve unit based in Des Moines and stationed at the logistics base in Port Shuaiba, Kuwait, amid escalating hostilities after the U.S. and Israel launched a military campaign against Iran one day earlier.
- O'Brien's service record shows he was promoted to major in August 2024 and served nearly 15 years in the Army Reserve, while Coady was posthumously promoted to sergeant and studied cybersecurity at Drake University, Des Moines.
- Flags will be lowered immediately and remain at half-staff until sunset on the final day of interment at the State Capitol Building, Capitol Complex, and all public buildings statewide; funeral arrangements are pending as the soldiers' bodies are returned.
- The other slain soldiers include Sgt. Class Nicole Amor, Capt. Cody Khork, Sgt. Class Noah Tietjens and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Robert Marzan, and Senator Joni Ernst said `the nation owes the fallen an incredible debt of gratitude`.
