New Brunswick says an inmate’s escape from Shediac, N.B., jail was preventable

The review cited missed inmate counts, delayed police notice and other shortcomings, and said the province has since tightened security at several jails.

  • An internal review by the New Brunswick government concluded that the February escape of inmate Todd Lewis from the Southeastern Regional Correctional Centre in Shediac was preventable.
  • Lewis remained at large for over a month after escaping the facility until RCMP officers apprehended him in Moncton on March 23. Authorities delayed reporting the escape for more than six hours after it occurred.
  • The Department of Justice and Public Safety announced it "enhanced physical security measures" at the Shediac jail and updated staff procedures to ensure prisoner counts are "more thorough."
  • Public Safety Minister Robert Gauvin stated that "corrective actions" "had been taken on a" small number of employees after the review identified "shortcomings there" in inmate count procedures.
  • Beyond the Shediac facility, the province implemented changes at other jails to improve safety, as Gauvin noted the majority of correctional staff carry out their duties with professionalism and dedication.
