Malaysian Rapper Namewee in Police Detention over Murder Probe of Taiwanese Influencer Iris Hsieh

Malaysian police upgraded the case to murder after Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh was found dead in a dry bathtub, with rapper Namewee sought for arrest, officials said.

  • On Oct 22, Iris Hsieh was found dead at the Banyan Tree Hotel, and Kuala Lumpur police reclassified the case as murder under Section 302, seeking rapper Wee Meng Chee, known as Namewee.
  • Initially classified as sudden death, investigators noted the hotel bathtub was completely dry and post-mortem and toxicology reports are pending.
  • Investigators say Namewee was the last person seen with the victim at about 1.40pm, and police said he was arrested with nine ecstasy pills and positives for amphetamines, methamphetamine, ketamine and THC.
  • Kuala Lumpur police said they have recorded statements from hotel staff and security personnel while reviewing railways and airport movement checks, and expect to make an arrest soon on Nov 4.
  • Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said its Malaysia office notified Hsieh's family and Namewee, who rose to fame with 'Fragile,' pleaded not guilty and awaits a Dec. 18 hearing.
