- On Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated India's first tempered glass manufacturing facility in Noida, set up by Optiemus Electronics with Rs 870 crore investment alongside Corning Incorporated .
- Backing the push for self-reliance, the Make in India initiative targets domestic production of all mobile components amid India's domestic tempered glass demand exceeding 500 million pieces annually and a global tempered glass market valued over $60 billion.
- Phase 1 included a Rs 70 crore investment for 25 million units annually and over 600 jobs, while Phase 2 plans 200 million units with Rs 800 crore more and over 4,500 jobs, said Ashok Kumar Gupta, Chairman of Optiemus Infracom.
- The facility will serve domestic and international markets, reducing India's import dependence, and Vaishnaw urged expanding the research team headcount from 40 to 400, highlighting India's electronics production value of Rs 11.5 lakh crore and GDP growth of 7.8%.
- Industry leaders note the labour-intensive tempered glass segment offers MSMEs and export growth, while the domestic market has a retail value of INR 20,000 crore and a Made-in-India chip will launch soon.
