India's Skyroot Aerospace Readies Country's First Private Orbital Rocket Launch
The test flight will carry domestic and international payloads and gather performance data as India opens its space sector to private companies.
- On Thursday, Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace announced a launch window between July 12 and August 4 for the maiden test flight of Vikram-1, India's first privately developed orbital-class rocket, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
- Mission Aagaman, named for 'the arrival,' marks Skyroot's first orbital attempt with the seven-story-tall vehicle designed to carry payloads of up to 350 kilograms into a 450-kilometer Low Earth Orbit.
- "We want to understand how the vehicle performs from lift-off through every phase of ascent," said Pawan Kumar Chandana, co-founder and CEO of Skyroot, adding that such data cannot be fully replicated through ground testing.
- The launch reflects India's opening of its state-dominated space sector to private companies, bolstering Skyroot, which reached a $1 billion valuation after raising $60 million from GIC and Sherpalo Ventures in May.
- Industrial groups like Larsen & Toubro and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited are entering rocket manufacturing as the government pushes to build a $44 billion space economy by 2033, strengthening India's national launch capabilities.
