India's 'cockroach' movement to protest from Oct. 2 if poll chief does not quit by Saturday

The youth-led group says the poll chief must quit over voter-roll revision allegations or face nationwide protests and a sit-in in Delhi.

  • On Thursday, Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke demanded Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resign within 48 hours, threatening nationwide agitation and an indefinite sit-in in Delhi if he fails to step down.
  • An investigative report published by The Indian Express revealed that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi formally objected at least 14 times over 10 months to decisions regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, allegedly made without their knowledge.
  • Opposition parties allege the Special Intensive Revision process led to deletion of 130 million voter names nationwide, while former Chief Election Commissioner O P Rawat described changes to statutory Form 6 as "absolutely wrong and illegal."
  • While the Election Commission asserted on Wednesday that all decisions were unanimous, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party staged nationwide protests on Friday demanding Kumar's immediate arrest over alleged "vote theft" and "treason."
  • A petition filed in the Supreme Court seeks criminal prosecution of Kumar for alleged statutory violations, while the commission extended claim deadlines in Delhi and Maharashtra until October 30 and October 12, respectively.
