India's 'cockroach' movement to protest from Oct. 2 if poll chief does not quit by Saturday
- On Friday, West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party President Samik Bhattacharya defended Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, stating he deserves the Padma Bhushan "at the very least" for ensuring a violence-free election and "cleansing" voter lists.
- The praise follows nationwide Congress protests against the Election Commission's functioning, specifically regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls after reports that other commissioners raised objections at least 14 times over 10 months.
- Congress workers staged protests across several states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and Manipur, marching against the Commission, burning effigies of Kumar, and demanding his resignation while police used water cannons in Patna and Chandigarh.
- Reacting to the BJP's praise on Saturday, Congress leader Pawan Khera dismissed the suggestion, stating, "The Padma Bhushan is a very small thing," and quipping that Kumar should instead be made Prime Minister.
- Opposition parties plan to move a motion in Parliament to remove the CEC, citing concerns over electoral-roll management, while the BJP asserts the public supports Kumar's efforts to curb electoral irregularities.
