Aditya Birla Group Acquires Shell's India Renewables Energy Arm, Sprng Energy, for $1.8bn
The deal adds a 5 GWp contracted portfolio and lifts Aditya Birla Renewables to 9.3 GWp, company officials said.
On Monday, Aditya Birla Renewables Ltd agreed to acquire Shell-backed Sprng Energy for about $1.8 billion, positioning the company among India's largest renewable energy players.
The acquisition adds a contracted portfolio of around 5 GWp, comprising 3.3 GWp of operational capacity and 1.7 GWp under construction, expanding ABRen's total to 9.3 GWp.
Director Aryaman Vikram Birla described the deal as "a pivotal moment in ABRen's evolution, rapidly accelerating our ambition to build a top-tier renewable energy platform at national scale."
Funding involves a mix of debt and equity from Grasim Industries and Global Infrastructure Partners , a part of BlackRock, with the transaction expected to close before year-end 2026.
Having nearly reached its prior 10 GWp target ahead of schedule, ABRen now targets more than 20 GWp of renewable energy capacity over the next few years.
