India tightens pollution curbs as Delhi's air quality worsens
Authorities escalated pollution controls under GRAP to Stage IV as Delhi-NCR’s Air Quality Index surpassed 450, triggering bans on older vehicles and halting construction, officials said.
- On Saturday , the Commission for Air Quality Management Sub-Committee on GRAP invoked Stage IV `Severe+` with immediate effect across Delhi-NCR after AQI breached 450.
- Officials attributed the rapid deterioration to stagnant winds and seasonal emissions, with a feeble western disturbance reducing wind speeds and trapping pollutants alongside vehicular, industrial emissions and crop-residue burning.
- Several pollution hotspots logged readings in the mid-400s, including Wazirpur , and the Central Pollution Control Board showed a 24-hour average AQI of 431 at 4 p.m., with late-evening averages hitting 452–455.
- Schools up to Class 5 shifted to hybrid learning and offices directed to operate at 50% staff strength; authorities banned BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel light vehicles, restricting older diesel goods trucks with narrow exemptions.
- Forecasts predict severe conditions persisting into Sunday , prompting health advisories as CAQM urged state governments of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to consider emergency steps including college closures or odd-even rules.
