DRDO Conducts Maiden Flight Tests of Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) Off Odisha Coast
The Integrated Air Defence Weapon System uses indigenous missiles and lasers to simultaneously destroy multiple aerial targets, enhancing India's protection against complex threats, officials said.
- At 12.30 hours on Sunday, August 23, 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation successfully conducted maiden flight tests of the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System off the coast of Odisha.
- Amid rising drone and missile incidents earlier this year, New Delhi accelerated the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System to counter evolving aerial threats and reduce foreign dependence after Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam attack, officials said.
- During the test, the IADWS integrated Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missiles, Advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System, and Directed Energy Weapon under a Centralised Command and Control Centre, destroying three targets simultaneously.
- Government officials hailed the trial as a landmark for self-reliance that will better shield critical infrastructure and sensitive facilities from aerial attacks.
- The trials follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push for indigenous air-defence under Mission Sudarshan Chakra, aligning with efforts to build India's defence ecosystem and deter threats from Pakistan and China.
