India Fines Air India US$110,350 in Airbus Incident, Says Lapse Eroded Public Confidence

  • On Feb 5, the DGCA fined Air India USD 110,350 for operating an Airbus A320 on Nov 24–25 without a valid ARC, affecting eight flights.
  • During an engine change the ARC expired, and DGCA took responsibility for the first ARC renewals after the Vistara merger in November 2024.
  • An internal probe found systemic failures, and Reuters reported pilots on the eight flights breached SOPs; a February 5 DGCA order blamed Campbell Wilson, Air India CEO, for eroding public confidence.
  • The aircraft re-entered service on December 10 after ARC renewal, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has asked Air India to deposit 10 million Indian rupees, or US$110,339, within 30 days.
  • Amid tighter scrutiny after the June 12 Dreamliner crash, Air India says it voluntarily reported the expired ARC last year and has addressed identified gaps satisfactorily.
