The number of drownings was twice as high at the beginning of the summer of 2025 as in the same period in the previous year, in particular the precocity of canicular episodes that led to the attendance of little or no monitored courses and water bodies.
In France, drownings remain the leading cause of death in everyday life among people under 25 years of age. Between 1 June and 23 July, 193 people died as a result of drowning, including 27 children and adolescents.
702 drownings, including 193 fatal ones, were recorded in France between July 1 and 23, Public Health France announced.
