After Tsunami Warning, Oregon Lawmaker Calls for Better Disaster Preparedness
OREGON, AUG 6 – The package would fund new training facilities, establish a Disaster Recovery Authority, and provide grants to local agencies to enhance emergency response statewide, Rep. Evans said.
- Last week, Oregon state Rep. Paul Evans, D-Monmouth, called the tsunami advisory on the Oregon Coast ‘a good warmup,’ noting it was lower than a warning, according to the National Weather Service.
- Evans noted that volunteer firefighters and emergency responders face piecemeal training and that federal capacity is being cut, hindering Oregon's disaster preparedness.
- Within 24 hours, the Oregon Department of Emergency Management called off the tsunami advisory after city and county police, firefighters warned coastal residents to stay inland and OR-Alert texts were sent.
- Proposing familiar legislation, Evans will introduce a three-pronged, $300 million disaster preparedness package to the state Legislature in early 2026, including six to seven new emergency responder training facilities.
- According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Evans warned tsunamis can occur more than 20 hours after initial waves, emphasizing Oregon must prepare independently.
