Immigration courts reportedly begin 'mega master' hearings, applying to more than 100 immigrants at a time
The new docket format is meant to speed cases and boost removal orders, while attorneys warn many immigrants may miss rescheduled dates.
- Immigration courts across the country are scheduling hearings for 100 or more immigrants at once, called 'mega masters,' with the practice starting in Chicago, Boston, and Chelmsford, Mass., and soon expanding to Dallas Immigration Court.
- Each mega masters hearing clusters 100 or more immigrants before one judge, compared to two or three dozen previously, with immediate removal orders issued if immigrants miss the hearing. Vanessa Dojaquez-Torres, practicing policy counsel at AILA, said the practice appears 'designed to increase' automatic deportation orders.
- Despite announcing record judicial hirings, the Justice Department brought on 77 judges and five temporary military lawyers last week, yet more than 100 judges have been fired or forced out over the past year, including several in New York and California.
- Cases originally scheduled for 2027, 2028, or 2029 are being pulled forward into mega masters hearings as ICE plans to detain at least 99,000 people daily. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated the administration is 'committed to restoring the rule of law' in the immigration system.
