Illinois cancels scheduled football games against Mizzou
Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman announced Tuesday that the school canceled its 2027 and 2028 football games against Missouri, replacing them with a home-and-home series against Notre Dame for those same seasons.
Proximity, common values, and deep roots in Chicago and the Midwest drove Whitman's decision to revive the series with the Irish, who have not played Illinois since 1968.
Missouri athletic director Laird Veatch expressed disappointment, stating the university is exploring options to address the withdrawal; a contract clause obtained by the Tribune suggests Illinois could face a $500,000 penalty.
To replace the canceled games, Missouri must secure a new Power-conference opponent for 2027 and 2028 to satisfy SEC scheduling mandates, though the teams remain scheduled to meet four times between 2029 and 2035.
These adjustments reflect the anticipated 24-team playoff and Big Ten requirements for Power 4 nonleague opponents, with uncertainty remaining whether the $500,000 penalty applies due to potential contractual stipulations.
