Alleged Illegal Immigrant Charged with Voting in Multiple Vigo Co. Elections
Prosecutors say the 21-year-old voted in the 2017 municipal election and the 2020 general election, and the case is still pending.
- On Thursday, prosecutors charged 41-year-old Terre Haute resident Romero with illegal voting and perjury. He allegedly registered as a citizen to vote in the 2019 municipal and 2020 general elections despite being born outside the United States.
- Attorney General Todd Rokita initiated a process two years ago to verify voter citizenship status using federal data. This marks the first time Indiana has prosecuted a case for alleged illegal voting based on this verification.
- Facing a maximum prison sentence of 11.5 years, Romero was released on $10,000 bond. Records indicate he voted in the 2019 municipal election and 2020 general election after completing a form stating he was a citizen.
- After being booked into the Vigo County jail on Wednesday and released that morning, Romero appeared in court Thursday for a pre-trial hearing. Charges were filed by Aaron and Matt Selge of the attorney general's litigation unit.
- Ensuring the integrity of Vigo County elections remains a priority, Rokita stated, as his office pursues other cases even while the citizenship verification statute remains subject to ongoing litigation.
