More People Now Use GLP-1s for Weight Loss than for Other Health Conditions, Research Finds
The committee says the rollout reaches only 6% of eligible patients and urges wider access, better data-sharing and stronger action against the black market.
On Friday, the Health and Social Care Committee criticized the NHS rollout of Mounjaro, warning that current plans are 'unambitious' and will reach only a 'woefully small number of people' eligible for the weight-loss drug.
Data indicates only around 6% of eligible patients will receive Mounjaro over three years, as the NHS restricts access to those with a BMI of more than 35 and four serious health conditions.
A 'two-tier system' for access risks driving patients to unregulated black market sources for GLP-1s, committee members warned, as those unable to access NHS treatment face significant private costs.
To improve access, MPs recommended doubling bariatric surgery—a 'cost-effective underutilised treatment for obesity'—and leveraging approved digital providers to prescribe and monitor patients at scale, reducing the burden on GPs.
Committee chairwoman Layla Moran argued that treating obesity as a chronic condition rather than a lifestyle issue could 'save the NHS billions in the long-term,' urging officials to prioritize improvements to obesity care.
