ICJ to deliver landmark climate ruling
NEW ZEALAND, JUL 21 – The International Court of Justice clarifies states' duties to reduce emissions and address climate harm, with nearly 3,000 climate cases filed globally by the end of 2024, experts say.
- The UN's top tribunal on Wednesday issues a landmark advisory opinion to clarify states' obligations to curb greenhouse gas emissions, AFP said, outlining potential consequences for polluters.
- Following heated negotiations in Azerbaijan, Vanuatu asked the International Court of Justice to define states' emission reduction duties.
- During December hearings the case took on a 'David versus Goliath' character, and nearly 3,000 climate cases have been filed globally by end of 2024, Grantham Research Institute reported.
- The court declared that 'massive and serious harm to the climate system through emissions, through deforestation and so on, is absolutely forbidden by international law,' the court said, while Andrew Raine noted advisory opinions are not binding but carry significant weight.
- The ICJ's ruling will give new strength to climate litigation, Prasad said, while another opinion reaffirmed the right to a healthy climate system and rights of nature.
