ICC bureau says Khan should be fired for inappropriate sexual relationship
The bureau cited a yearlong U.N. investigation and said the evidence proved serious misconduct beyond reasonable doubt.
On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, the International Criminal Court's executive bureau recommended removing Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan from office following findings of an inappropriate sexual relationship with a junior staff member.
An 18-month, UN-commissioned inquiry found Khan's behavior "escalated over time" into "non-consensual sexual contact," with the bureau concluding the power imbalance made such a relationship inappropriate.
Khan's lawyers called the bureau's decision "unlawful, procedurally unfair and unsupported by evidence" on Tuesday, citing a separate judicial review that found insufficient proof "beyond a reasonable doubt."
The 125-member Assembly of States Parties will vote on Khan's future in New York City on July 24, requiring at least 63 votes to pass the formal dismissal.
Arrest warrants issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant remain valid regardless of the outcome, despite ongoing U.S. sanctions against ICC officials.
