Bulgarian PM says drone attack on 2 commercial vessels is ‘blatant violation of international law’
- On Tuesday, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev reported that sea and aerial drones attacked two commercial vessels about 80 miles off Bulgaria's coast, marking the first attack on shipping in the country's exclusive economic zone.
- The strikes followed a separate attack against a Turkish-owned cargo ship in the Black Sea one day earlier; Romanian authorities reported two deaths and 11 crew members rescued after the vessel sank.
- During the incident, the Togo-flagged Alfa Watan sank after critical structural damage, while the Palau-flagged Able caught fire; a Bulgarian ferry evacuated all 18 crew members and two sailors with severe injuries were flown to Varna hospital.
- Radev called the incident "an unacceptable attack in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone," adding it is "seriously disrupting shipping in the Black Sea, driving up insurance costs and making shipping extremely difficult."
- Last month, Gen Alex Grynkewich urged NATO members to publicly identify those responsible for drone sabotage once sufficient evidence is gathered, though the origin of the drones in these attacks remains unestablished.
