Huntley death update as inmate accused of murder appears in court
Russell, 44, is accused of attacking Huntley with a metal bar in a jail workshop, and the victim died in hospital 10 days later.
On Wednesday, Anthony Russell appeared at Newcastle Crown Court via videolink from HMP Frankland to face murder charges in the death of Ian Huntley, with Mr Justice Hilliard setting a trial date for November 23.
Russell, 44, is charged with murdering the 52-year-old inmate following an alleged attack with a metal bar in a workshop at HMP Frankland on February 26; Huntley died on March 7.
Huntley was serving a life sentence for the 2002 murders of 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham, Cambridgeshire, and was convicted in 2003 with a 40-year minimum term.
A further pre-trial hearing is scheduled for July 3, with Russell appearing in a brown T-shirt and declining to enter a plea during Wednesday's brief court appearance.
Huntley died at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle after nine days in hospital, with legal proceedings now addressing the alleged workshop incident at the maximum security prison near Durham.
