Thunderstorms delay hundreds of Heathrow and Gatwick flights
Flight trackers showed more than 300 delays as the UK air traffic control service warned disruptions could continue through the day.
On Saturday, nearly 800 flights faced delays or cancellations at Heathrow and Gatwick after thunderstorms triggered temporary air traffic control restrictions across London's major airports.
Eurocontrol said flights must avoid a "broad area of hot, unstable air" stretching from Spain to Sweden, as the heatwave shifted into severe weather that swept across the Channel to northwestern Europe.
According to FlightAware, 377 flights at Heathrow were delayed while 399 were impacted at Gatwick, with some passengers reporting being stranded on planes for up to 4 hours.
British Airways and Easyjet pre-emptively cancelled flights and offered refunds or accommodation, while passenger Adam Joseph, 29, told BBC News he remained stranded at Venice airport after his Gatwick flight was delayed.
NATS, the UK's air traffic control service, said "weather disruption was expected to continue through the rest of the day" as an amber heat warning remained in place for South East England until Sunday morning.
